What range can I expect with my new VHF radio?

Fixed-mount marine radios will traditionally provide a better range than a handheld VHF. What is AIS and does my marine radio need that?

AIS, or Automatic Identification System, is similar to a Global Positioning System but actually identifies a specific marine VHF radio through registration. AIS is an added safety feature and some would say any safety feature is a good safety feature. Depending on how you use your boat and how far offshore you go, adding a VHF radio with AIS capabilities might be a great idea!
