What range can I expect with my new VHF radio?

Fixed-mount marine radios will traditionally provide a better range than a handheld VHF. At Defender Marine VHF radio antennas are available in several sizes and installation of a new antenna can extend the range considerably. High-power marine radio signals generally transmit up to 15 miles or better depending on atmospheric conditions. When it comes to handheld VHF radios, Defender Marine offers radios that receive from 3 to 8 miles

What is AIS and does my marine radio need that?

AIS, or Automatic Identification System, is similar to a Global Positioning System but actually identifies a specific marine VHF radio through registration. AIS is an added safety feature and some would say any safety feature is a good safety feature. Depending on how you use your boat and how far offshore you go, adding a VHF radio with AIS capabilities might be a great idea!

How do I choose from all of these VHF radio options?
